Adbri's trainee program builds community capability

Adbri is a construction materials and industrial mineral manufacturing company.
Adbri designed and implemented a community trainee program at its Southern Quarries operations in South Australia. The goal was to create long-term employment pathways within the local community to stabilise workforce risk and skill investment.
Prior to the implementation, Adbri had a high volume of both voluntary and involuntary departures as it looked to recruit for existing skills, rather than building capability within the local community.
The community-based training program included recruitment of employees from the communities in which Adbri operates, with a strong focus on cultural fit and alignment to the company pillars of safety, customer focus, inclusivity and sustainable growth.
The switch to sourcing employees from the local community has resulted in 11 community trainees successfully completing the program in 18 months and becoming full-time Adbri employees (compared with two in 2019 using traditional training methods).
The community trainee program at Adbri’s Southern Quarries operations will continue to be a key part of its attraction strategy for its South Australian quarries. The program has proved more effective than previous programs, with substantially higher retention levels.
