Yoorndoo Ilga Solar Project

Commendation: Community, Energy sector

Yoorndoo Ilga Solar Project is a 300 MW solar and 250 MW/500 MWh battery storage project located on approximately 665 ha of land north of Whyalla. The project is being developed by EPS Energy and AMP Energy in partnership with the Barngarla Community, on land which is owned in freehold by the Barngarla Determination Aboriginal Corporation (BDAC).

The partnership established an unprecedented process where the state returned Crown Land to the direct ownership of the native title holders as freehold.

The key project goals are to provide significant positive economic, social and environmental outcomes for the Barngarla people, Whyalla region and the state of South Australia, including:

  • enabling equitable participation of the Barngarla people in the South Australian renewable energy sector
  • provide long term revenue to BDAC from sustainable use of their land for the benefit of the Barngarla community
  • create industry and employment diversity for the Barngarla community and Whyalla region
  • support the Government of South Australia’s vision of green hydrogen production and export at Port Bonython
  • deliver clean and renewable energy targets for the state and whole of Australia

Q&A with EPS Energy

Our project is Yoorndoo Ilga Solar, being developed by EPS Energy and Amp Energy.

The project is a large scale solar and battery energy storage facility proposed over 665 ha of land just north of Whyalla.

‘Yoorndoo Ilga’ in Barngarla language means “having or possessing the sun” and is the preferred project name chosen by the Barngarla.

The project is on Barngarla land and the site is owned in freehold by the Barngarla People.

Our project is a 300 MW solar facility accompanied by up to 250 MW battery storage with 2 hours duration.

The project is about:

  • recognition of the traditional custodians of the land and ensuring real financial, social and environmental benefits are created from renewable energy developments on their Country
  • actioning the need for transition to low carbon emission industry for Australia’s electricity sector
  • supporting South Australia’s emerging green hydrogen industry and proposed hydrogen hub at Port Bonython.

The partnership alliance model between Yoorndoo Ilga Solar and the Barngarla People established the pathway and model for Barngarla Determination Aboriginal Corporation (BDAC) to realise economic opportunities on Barngarla native title land.

Importantly, the model results in freehold ownership of land for the Barngarla People for commercial development resulting in significant enduring revenue opportunities.

Hence, this innovative partnership model provides a positive sustainable difference for the community and paves the pathway for similar arrangements and financial opportunities for all native title holders in South Australia.

The collaboration model benefits native title holders in South Australia and is applicable across other many other sectors.

Our decision to nominate for an award is to highlight the success story of our close partnership with the Barngarla Board and their advisors, Norman Waterhouse, and tell the story of the unprecedented process where the sate of South Australia returned Crown Land via a sale of the land to the direct freehold ownership of the native title holders.

We seek to raise awareness for both industry and native title holders of the significant mutual opportunities and benefits of the possible partnerships and arrangements as navigated by Barngarla Determination Aboriginal Corporation and EPS Energy.

One of the best things about working in South Australia is the ‘can do’ attitude of everyone we have worked with, from the Barngarla, Norman Waterhouse to local and state government agencies.

Climate change is arguably one of the most topical social and environmental issues of today.

The future for the renewable energy and storage industry is bright, as the urgent need of change in how we operate as a society is necessary to provide intergenerational equity for future generations in the face of climate change challenges.

EPS Energy will continue its ambition of playing a small role in the transition to a net zero sustainable future

The Premier’s Awards recognise and communicate the many and broad achievements of the mining and energy industry.

The Awards raise awareness and accentuate industry best practice.

Reflecting upon the completion of the lease arrangements between the Barngarla and Yoorndoo Ilga Solar was the moment where we realised the importance of sharing the story.

The success and the significance of the partnership model is important to share as it communicates the story leading to freehold ownership of land for the Barngarla People and consequently significant enduring revenue opportunities for the Barngarla community.

  • Recognition of the need for a positive and sustainable transition of Australia’s electricity sector to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • Choosing to participate in the energy transition and play an active role today for the benefit of future generations
  • Recognising the traditional custodians of the land and seeking equitable opportunities and benefits for all communities where we operate

Working in South Australia has been a wonderful experience.

Being NSW based, EPS Energy has received a warm welcome and incredible positive support from communities, government at local and state level and organisations.

South Australia is a great place to do business.

Take the time to meet the traditional custodians and communities where you plan to operate.

Seek to create genuine long-lasting relationships that is both equitable and beneficial for all.
