Kulpara Quarry - process and sustainability improvements

Commendation: Productivity improvement, Resources sector

Kulpara Quarry on Yorke Peninsula is a problematic deposit with highly weathered limestone and clay contamination. Due to the nature of
the deposit, traditional quarry process and production methods have not always produced a product that meets customer expectations, resulting in high percentages of waste products being stockpiled.

Several innovative changes to the production processes have minimised the handling and production, reducing the cost of production and ultimately leading towards a more sustainable operation, minimising waste products and value adding into saleable products.

Process improvements included eliminating the need to operate a mobile screening plant with base material produced directly from the main plant, and the addition of a reclaimer screen to clean up waste stockpiles, separating out the clay and clean rock.

The reduction in operating costs correlates to a reduction in fuel usage related to truck and loader movements, and mobile crushing and screening operations which have been eliminated.
