How to drive around the world 500 times safely - the Santos story

Winner: Resources Health and Safety

Santos truck drivers travel more than 20 million kilometres a year, often through the most remote parts of Australia where unsealed roads are commonplace.

The distance travelled is equivalent to driving around the globe 500 times.

According to the Office of Road Safety, driving distance in remote regions is 11 times higher than the city, meaning the risk of a vehicle related fatality or injury is higher. The Australian International Road Safety Comparison also reports that for every 100 million kilometres, the fatality rate is 0.45 and the hospitalisation rate is 15.3.

These statistics spurred Santos Onshore Production Operations team to review Santos’ fleet and driving standards, including in-vehicle monitoring.
The results were transformative:

  • 35% reduction in LSR rate and importantly, a 75% reduction in speeding LSRs
  • 50% reduction in the rate of fatigue events
  • significant cultural change to driving
  • sustainable performance

The range of risk management initiatives established were used to create a system that can be implemented across the business and incorporated into future planning.

Nominated project: Cooper Basin waste minimisation project

Premier's Award category: Environment, Resources sector

The Cooper Basin is one of Santos’ longest running assets which, over time, has generated a large amount of legacy waste. The Cooper Basin Waste Minimisation Project drives lasting step changes in the management of waste and the implementation of behavioural improvement initiatives to achieve Santos’ ‘Zero Waste to Landfill by 2050’.

The project has seen a significant reduction in waste, with an increased waste diversion rate, through the implementation of waste improvement initiatives. These include securing partnerships with key contractors to deliver a waste reduction (shredding) campaign in Moomba, and waste minimisation campaigns which included the removal of 5,000 single-use lunch containers.

Team Leader Operations Support for the Cooper, Julie Tuppen, has identified a number of waste reduction opportunities and has become the face of efforts to drive improved environmental performance throughout the Cooper Basin.

The project has had an enormous impact on both the Santos workforce and broader contractor community with a notable shift in awareness and attitude.
