The South Australian Government has signed the Zero Emission Vehicles Declaration as part of its $41 million Electric Vehicle (EV) Action Plan to jump start electric vehicles in South Australia.

The Declaration aligns with the goals of South Australia's Electric Vehicle Action Plan (PDF) and supports South Australia’s commitment to leadership in renewable energy domestically and across the world.

South Australia’s electric vehicle action plan aims to achieve 50% of new car sales as electric by 2030, and having EVs the default choice by 2035.

The $41 million EV Action Plan includes:

  • $22.7 million in subsidies – including $3,000 subsidies for 7,000 vehicles and waiving registration for three years.
  • $18.3 million to build a statewide charging network, and encourage smart charging so electric vehicles absorb excess renewable energy and support the lower power prices.
  • The SA Government’s fleet policy, which is transition the fleet over to zero emissions by 2030 using existing spending, and which will build the used car market.

Electric vehicles are expected to approach parity with petrol and diesel models over the decade.

In signing the Declaration, South Australia will align with targets including:

  • advocating for smart charging standards, tax reforms, and fleet uptake of electric vehicles
  • securing private investment in charging infrastructure
  • integrating charging into planning reforms and growth strategies
  • bringing forward the benefits of electric vehicle uptake such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions, lower transport costs, nationally competitive electricity costs and improved air quality and associated health outcomes.

Further announcements on electric vehicle subsidies, the statewide charging network, and smart charging will be announced in coming weeks.
