It’s more than a mark, it is our story.

The Department of Energy and Mining’s new branding is reflective of why we do what we do, and the power we have to bring change.

The basis of the new look comes from artwork created by Lawson Dodd, a Kaurna, Narungga and Ngarrindjeri man. It combines traditional cultural customs with modern designs to reflect our collaborative relationships with First Nations Australians. It also symbolises the unique natural assets we manage for the community.

Lawson's Aboriginal artwork

Lawson has used organic lines and circles for the symbol in the middle to demonstrate the synergy between energy and mining and its connection to land. The small arching shapes surrounding it represent the diverse group of people involved with the department. The large circular areas represent wider communities.

The thin white lines and dots in the centre demonstrate the importance of communication as it is what guides innovation.

The streams of colour represent the different sectors of the department – green for energy, yellow ochre for solar, grey for wind, blue for gas and red ochre for mining.

We particularly acknowledge the essential role that First Nations Australians play in the energy and mining sector as land managers, heritage custodians, business owners and community leaders. We recognise and respect their cultural connections as the traditional owners and occupants of the land and waters of South Australia.

Integral to the brand’s development was a re-evaluation of the service we provide to the people of South Australia, culminating in the release of the DEM Strategic Direction 2021 to 2024. Our updated vision is to become the most transformative energy and mining government department in the world.

We lead the global transformation economy, overseeing the responsible mining and production of the minerals, metals and fuels of the future to safely and sustainably generate the energy and low carbon products of the future.

Our low-cost power, leading regulation system and culture of innovation is leading to the decarbonisation of industry, new modern manufacturing opportunities, increased employment and greater prosperity and security for the people of South Australia.

We look forward to continuing our successful partnerships and relationships into the future as we support an energy and mining sector that enables South Australia to responsibly grow and thrive.
