Trafigura Group Pte. Ltd. (Trafigura), one of the world’s largest physical commodity trading companies, and Nyrstar, a global multi-metals manufacturing business, are progressing plans to construct a commercial scale green hydrogen manufacturing facility in Port Pirie.

If approved, the AU$750 million project will be developed in a phased manner, initially producing 20 tonnes of green hydrogen per day for export in the form of green ammonia.

The full-scale plant will produce 100 tonnes of green hydrogen per day from a 440MW electrolyser, enabling it to meet both export and domestic supply needs.

The oxygen created in the production of hydrogen will be utilised by the Nyrstar Port Pirie smelter.

Trafigura will source 100 percent renewable electricity to run the project’s electrolyser, contributing to the decarbonisation of the existing smelter’s power supply.

The Government of South Australia is accelerating the Front End Engineering Design for the project with a $2.5m grant from the Jobs and Economic Growth Fund.
