Updated Ministerial determinations for new quarry applications and operation approvals came into effect this week.

The process has been streamlined to clearly set out the minimum legal requirements and ensure high quality submissions.

The updated Ministerial determinations provide the minimum information that must be provided within a mining proposal and Program for Environment Protection and Rehabilitation for extractive mineral leases as required by the Mining Act 1971 and Mining Regulations 2011.

Extractive minerals include basalt, clay, dolomite, granite, gravel, limestone, marble, sand and slate when used for construction purposes, but excludes these materials if they are used for industrial, agricultural and ornamental uses.

A review of the Ministerial determinations and subsequent engagement with the peak extractives industry body - Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia (CCAA) - highlighted improvements that could be made to ensure the requirements are fit for purpose while continuing to support the growth of the industry and positive working relationships with community.
