Energy Masters

Supported by the Government of South Australia, Energy Masters is empowering 500 South Australian households with smart appliances, tools and know-how to take control of their energy use, save on their bills and reduce their carbon footprint.

In return, households are participating in research that will strengthen South Australia’s position at the front of the global energy transition. It is expected to demonstrate a simple, reliable and cost-effective way for all South Australians to become masters of their own energy use.

Search for a better electricity plan

You can contact your energy retailer and ask if they can improve your current deal. Make sure you understand any fees related with switching. For example, exit or early termination fees.

The Energy Made Easy website has an online tool that compares other available electricity and gas plans in your area to help you find an alternative offer. This is a free Australian Government energy price comparison service for households and small businesses.

Concessions and rebates to reduce your energy bills

You may be eligible for assistance for assistance from the Australian government and state government to reduce your energy bills. Contact your energy retailer to check if you are eligible for any concessions or rebates.

The Government of South Australia offers some of the following concessions and rebates:


Energy bill relief

Offer: Up to $150 off electricity bills for the first two quarters of the 2025/26 financial year.

Eligibility: You must

  • be located in South Australia
  • be separately metered and charged for energy consumption.

How to apply: You don't need to do anything to receive this - your electricity provider or embedded network operator will automatically apply the bill relief to your electricity account.


Energy bill concessions

Offer: Help with paying your electricity bill at your main residence if you are on a low or fixed income.

Eligibility: You must

  • live at the property you are applying for
  • have an energy account in your name and be listed first on your energy bill
  • hold an eligible concession card or receive an eligible Centrelink payment.

How to apply: The online form covers four household concessions, including the energy concession.

SA Concessions Energy Discount Offer (SACEDO)

Offer: A guaranteed ongoing 17% off electricity usage and supply charges.

Eligibility: You must

  • be an Origin Energy customer
  • be receiving the standard energy concession.

How to apply: You can only get the SACEDO if you are already receiving the energy concession.


Emergency electricity payment

Offer: An emergency payment to help electricity customers in financial hardship.

Eligibility: You must

  • have an electricity debt
  • be at risk of your electricity being disconnected, or it has already been disconnected.

How to apply: Contact a financial counsellor to assess your financial situation. They can lodge an application on your behalf.

Cost of living concession (COLC)

Offer: A yearly payment to help tenants and homeowners on low or fixed incomes with their general living expenses, for example council rates, energy and medical bills.

Eligibility: An assessment of your circumstances on 1 July of the relevant financial year will check if you:

  • Live at the property
  • Hold an eligible card receive an eligible Centrelink payment, or meet low income provisions
  • Are a tenant, hold a written rental agreement such as
    • residential tenancy agreement
    • rooming house agreement
    • resident contract for a supported residential facility
