The Geological Survey of South Australia (GSSA) provides vital pre-competitive data, resources and services to the resource sector on South Australia’s geology, geoscience and geography to inform decision-making by government, industry and the community.

The South Australia Drill Core Library is globally recognised as providing the best possible services to industry, academia and the people of South Australia.

The team are the custodians of South Australia's drill core and geological samples. They ensure those samples are available for viewings and inspections, catalogued appropriately and digitally available. The team are also a wealth of knowledge for companies providing drill core and geological sample submissions.

The Core Library offers event space for seminars and meetings, and the team can support you in managing events at the facility.

The Industry Facilitation and Geoscience team focuses on the mineral and energy prospectivity of South Australia, with a key aim to reduce the critical geoscientific uncertainty and increase company mineral and energy resource investment, stimulate exploration activity and ultimately production and royalties.

The team of geoscientists has specialised skills across six work programs:

  • Regional geology, digital and field mapping
  • Mineral systems analysis
  • Basin and energy resource play analysis and gas storage, including natural hydrogen and geothermal energy
  • Prospectivity analysis
  • Geological and geophysical data acquisition and interpretation
  • Resource evaluation and planning

The team is responsible for:

  • prospectivity research at a regional scale to generate a full cycle portfolio of geological concepts that are used to promote mineral and energy resource investment opportunities nationally and internationally
  • developing, delivering, and promoting pre-competitive geoscience initiatives
  • providing strategic input to generate new competitive tender exploration acreage releases
  • providing geoscientific advice and expertise to stakeholders, industry, and academic researchers.

The team's core business is to manage and develop geoscientific data and information systems to promote South Australia's mineral and energy prospectivity in the global marketplace. This involves assembling, maintaining and making available geoscientific information to meet the expectations of all customers and stakeholders.

The team is responsible for:

  • providing custodianship and management of South Australia's geoscience and geospatial data
  • managing mineral and energy geoscience data to comply with the Mining Act 1971, Energy Resources Act 2000 and associated regulations
  • managing and delivering high-quality pre-competitive geoscience information, maps and online platforms such as SARIG and PEPS South Australia
  • expanding the digital footprint of South Australian geoscience information to unlock mineral and energy resources
  • delivering international and national standard geoscience web services to enable future data-driven exploration technologies
  • ensuring South Australian geoscience digital assets are valued, reliable and accurate by following the FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) and TRUST (transparency, responsibility, user focus, sustainability, technology) principles
  • providing advice to industry on meeting their obligations regarding statutory digital data submissions.
