As transport emissions accounted for 30% of South Australia's greenhouse gas emissions in 2018–19, electrification of transport is a priority of the state government's target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2030, and reach net zero emissions by 2050.

To support the uptake of electric vehicles the government introduced an electric vehicle subsidy package.
