Commendation: Community - Resources

BHP is focused on the resources the world needs to develop and decarbonise, including copper, nickel, potash, iron ore and metallurgical coal for the steel needed for global infrastructure and the energy transition.

Healthy Environs works collectively with communities across urban, rural and remote Australia to strengthen wellbeing and resilience through policy, projects and place-based approaches.

Healthy Environs offers a multi-disciplinary sustainability and community development team with strengths in building community connections through effective engagement, program delivery and reflecting community voice in policy and action. We provide an organisational backbone to building linkages between community groups, government and the corporate sector.

Through Healthy Environs partnership with BHP they have worked collaboratively with many stakeholders across the Roxby region since 2015. Through authentic community connections, they have delivered programs and activated the Roxby Community Hub space in a way that fosters local ownership and pride.

The Community Hub is a BHP-funded initiative, managed in partnership with Healthy Environs.

The hub provides a safe and welcoming place for locals to connect with others, where they can access relevant support services that improve their health and wellbeing and enable them to be resilient and effective within the community.

Residents in Roxby Downs and surrounds are often isolated from their extended support networks. The Hub provides an opportunity to build community connections and supports the livability and vibrancy of the region.

The Hub’s core focus areas include:

• Place-based approaches to connecting community and activating Roxby’s retail centre
• Building an online community to advance virtual community connections and program outreach
• Supporting activities that align with the Hub’s themes of wellbeing and families such as resilience-focused programs and events
• Facilitating local stakeholder involvement through collaboration within local and visiting organisations such as Council, Schools and community-based services

Data shows that the Community Hub is having an impact on and benefiting individuals and the broader community by enhancing adaptive skills within the community, enhancing community capacity and building resilience thereby reducing individual vulnerability.
