Winner: Community - Resources sector
BHP is focused on the resources the world needs to develop and decarbonise, including copper, nickel, potash, iron ore and metallurgical coal for the steel needed for global infrastructure and the energy transition.
The three Upper Spencer Gulf Councils – Port Pirie, Whyalla and Port Augusta - along with the Municipality of Roxby Downs are members of the Spencer Gulf Cities Local Government alliance. Spencer Gulf Cities is a region defined in the South Australian Local Government Association's constitution.
Program: Upper Spencer Gulf socio-economic knowledge base update
The Carrapateena team and local government advocacy alliance (Port Augusta City Council, Port Pirie Regional Council and Whyalla City Council) undertook a joint update of Carrapateena's historical socio-economic database.
Community profiles for the database were collated using existing regional plans and output from the latest census. Land-connected stakeholders (Kokatha Aboriginal Corporation, pastoralists) were invited to contribute data. Developments since the Carrapateena mine commenced operation were also included.
This collaborative approach helped reduce data duplication and resulted in a current knowledge base other stakeholders could use, at no cost to them, to better inform community development decisions.
Information collected included housing reports, regional blueprints, council economic growth and investment strategies, climate change adaption reports and priority plans and local jobs plans.
The update was done in a transparent and informative way, enabling shared value.
By opening up the database on request, information is made available to community stakeholders who might otherwise not be able to afford to commission the research.
