South Australia is home to some of the world’s largest mineral deposits and Australia’s largest multi-metal smelters.

The state is resource rich, hosting:

  • 68% of Australia’s economically demonstrated copper resources
  • more than 19 billion tonnes of magnetite iron ore, capable of feeding a future green iron market
  • critical minerals, including graphite and rare earths ready for the next stage of development.

With abundant wind and solar energy supplying 75% of the state’s electricity, South Australia’s clean energy transition is powering industry and supporting our role in the global decarbonisation economy.

The Department for Energy and Mining is driving the game changers that shape South Australia’s economic future by:

  • supporting copper expansion through regulatory pathways
  • expanding gas supply with 2025 acreage releases, beginning with new releases in the Otway Basin and Polda Basins (Eyre Peninsula)
  • leading in energy policy, to firm energy supplies and plan for electricity load growth in the Mid North and Upper Spencer Gulf
  • securing the future of steelmaking by leading Whyalla’s industrial and economic transformation.

Unlocking opportunities

Precompetitive data for exploration

The Northern Gawler NDI, a collaboration between the Geological Survey of South Australia and MinEx CRC, has delivered new data, available on the NDI Dashboard

The 3-year Critical Minerals South Australia project has catalogued the state’s critical mineral inventory, providing open data to derisk and stimulate private sector activity.

The Geological Survey of South Australia (GSSA) has also produced a package of report books highlighting South Australia’s prospectivity in beryllium, cobalt, graphite, high purity alumina, lithium, magnesium, manganese, rare earth elements, titanium, vanadium, and uranium.

The critical minerals project has delivered two interactive critical minerals and mine waste dashboards delivering information on South Australia's critical mineral potential both in the ground and on the surface as mine waste.

Our world leading South Australian Resources Information Gateway (SARIG) continues to evolve, delivering spatial data, information and products for the mining and exploration community.

This year, the Geological Survey of South Australia launched the new SARIG Catalogue, giving seamless access to publications, reports, geological maps, products and models.

The SARIG Core Intelligence program will leverage the geoscience wealth of the South Australia Drill Core Library’s past, present and future, to enable modern data-driven exploration and resource discovery.

The program seeks to expand South Australia’s geoscience information leadership by transforming physical resources into a digital intelligence library, making access to linked data sets easy.

Major projects and mining activities dashboard

The major minerals project and mining activities dashboards brings together real time information on mines, quarries and developing projects.

South Australia’s magnetite deposits are stepping onto the global stage

A magnetite global comparison study by Amira Global, undertaken by CSIRO and facilitated by the GSSA compares South Australia’s magnetite deposits to 198 deposits globally.

The study indicates South Australia’s magnetite resources are comparable to economically viable mines in Western Australia and Canada, with our competitiveness striking the right balance between deposit scale, grind size, concentrate quality and comminution efficiency.
