A new era in Port Augusta’s evolution as an energy and industry stronghold is set to be ushered in with a landmark agreement struck between the South Australian Government, Hallett Group and Korean companies Elecseed and Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power. Under an innovative plan by Hallett Group, fly ash from the former Playford B and Northern Power Stations in Port Augusta and slag from Nyrstar’s Port Pirie operation would be made into green cement.

Korean-Australian green hydrogen specialist Elecseed and Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power, one of Korea’s biggest energy companies, will build a 6 MW hydrogen electrolyser at the site of the former power stations, to use in processing the cement. It complements South Australia’s $593 million Hydrogen Jobs Plan, which is garnering major global interest as a hydrogen hub and putting the Upper Spencer Gulf on the map.

The Government of South Australia, Hallett Group, Elecseed and Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power signed a Statement of Cooperation in Adelaide today in a show of commitment to the plan. Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power see this project as a key entrance to develop their green hydrogen business in Australia and Korea.

Hallett Group’s $125 million project, which includes a $20 million Federal Government grant, will greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from cement manufacture. It should create 50 full time, ongoing jobs and hundreds more during construction.

Hallett Group expects to start construction early in the second half of 2024.
