The pipeline of large-scale renewable energy and storage projects under construction or with development approval in South Australia has rocketed in value to more than $32 billion, with almost $7 billion worth of projects already up and running, as two major new wind farm projects kick off construction today.
More than 200 construction jobs will be created to build Tilt Renewables’ 288 MW Palmer Wind Farm, 70 km east of Adelaide, which when complete will deliver enough renewable energy to power up to 142,000 South Australian homes.
The Palmer Wind Farm project is set to be a boon for regional suppliers.
It comes as one of the world’s leading renewable energy companies, Neoen, today launched the construction of its 346 MW Goyder North Wind Farm Stage 1 in the state’s mid-north.
Sustainable energy giant Vestas has been contracted to install 48 V172-7.2 MW wind turbines on the site, with the project expected to generate 1.3 terra-watt hours of renewable energy each year from 2029 – boosting wind generation in South Australia by around 10 per cent.
Stage 1 of Goyder North Wind Farm is underpinned by a 100 MW renewable energy baseload agreement with BHP to power its Olympic Dam, Carrapateena and Prominent Hill mines in South Australia, one of the world’s most significant basins for copper production.
The project, which is expected to create around 500 jobs during construction and more than 10 permanent roles during operations, forms part of Neoen's Goyder Renewables Zone, a hybrid renewables hub with a total capacity of 1.2 GW of total capacity. The combined wind farm projects in this zone are together expected to generate approximately 2.5 TWh of clean energy annually, enough to power more than 500,000 homes and contribute a fifth of South Australia’s annual electricity needs.
