Aim

The aim of this project was to generate new datasets and new exploration concepts to stimulate the next phase of gas exploration in the Warburton Basin (Daralingie Shelf region) to supply South Australian customers.

Introduction

The Warburton Basin is a vast subsurface region north and northeast of the Gawler Craton which received sediments during the Cambrian and Ordovician. The eastern part of the Warburton Basin underlies the bulk of the hydrocarbon producing Permian Cooper Basin (South Australia). The Warburton, like the Cooper Basin, is hydrocarbon-bearing with a significant catalogue of hydrocarbon shows recorded from a wide variety of lithologies and stratigraphic intervals.

Outcomes

Key results of the project include:

  • The oldest four Warburton sequences fill deep basins with succeeding sequences onlapping their western edge whereby their depocentres move east.
  • The youngest Warburton unit is a shallow water succession of highstand shelf sands and silts with some tidal deltaics, interfingering seaward with platform carbonates.

Three priority plays have been identified as warranting further study:

  • Topwee-Wooloo High: Fractured ‘400-1000’ sands between Big Lake Suite granitic intrusions
  • Lycosa-Moolalla Area: Strat-structural traps and fractured ‘800-1000’ sands
  • Dunoon-NM Horst Buried Hill Play
