Project: Torrens Island Battery

Premier's Awards category: Innovation and collaboration - Energy sector

The AGL Torrens Island Battery, delivered in conjunction with AGL's construction partner Wärtsilä, is now the largest grid-scale battery in South Australia and the second largest in the country. It will provide enough electricity to power approximately 75,000 South Australian homes for one hour – with the option to extend the duration to four hours in the future.

The battery will support the further growth of renewable energy penetration in South Australia, responding to changes in the power system in milliseconds to provide frequency control and system services with additional generation capacity when required.

It will primarily be charged with renewables when wind and solar is abundant and discharge at a later time when needed – to either stabilise the grid or provide additional capacity. The battery will also improve the reliability of supply in South Australia by adding 250 MW of capacity to the system that can be called on in periods of peak demand.

This ‘time-shifting’ of renewable energy will help prevent wastage and support the uptake of even greater levels of renewable energy in South Australia.

This project is also a pillar of AGL’s plan to transition its Torrens Island site into an industrial energy hub – utilising an existing grid connection point made available due to the closure of Torrens ‘A’ Station, land made available as a result of demolition of redundant fuel tanks, and the considerable expertise of the local Torrens workforce.

Crown Sponsorship support from the Department for Energy and Mining helped fast-track the project.
