The South Australian government awarded a grant of $12.35 million to the Royal Automobile Association of Australia (RAA) to construct and operate Australia's first statewide electric vehicle (EV) charging network. All sites under this partnership are now operational and the network continues go be managed and maintained by RAA and Chargefox.
The network currently comprises over 550 chargers across more than 140 electric vehicle charging stations powered by 100% renewable energy. Of these sites, 100 are in regional locations. These were aligned with main roads and regional thoroughfares throughout South Australia. with regional towns hosting sites helping motorists to overcome range anxiety and encouraging visits within those regions.
Infrastructure installed consisted of destination (7 kW and 22 kW) charging sites and rapid (150 kW) and ultra-rapid (200 kW) charging sites.
In 2023 the RAA received a commendation from Premier's Awards in Energy and Mining in recognition of the state’s first border-to-border electric vehicle charging network. In 2025 the RAA Charge Network was a joint winner of the Premier's Awards in Energy and Mining environment category for its role in decarbonising transport in South Australia.
