The South Australian Aboriginal Renewable Energy Forum (SAAREF) was formed to provide a two-way conversation between Aboriginal people and the Government to help inform the development of the Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Act and facilitate a wider discussion about how the renewable transition can be a vehicle for Aboriginal self-determination.
Why we are doing this
- Our vision
A renewable energy transition that creates a sustainable and prosperous future for all South Australians, enables self-determination for Aboriginal people, and responds to the impacts of the global climate emergency.
Seventy-four percent of our energy in South Australia is produced by wind and solar energy.
Supported by the development of our first hydrogen plant in the Upper Spencer Gulf, we are now on track to reach 100% renewable energy by 2027.

As Australia seeks to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, renewable energy sources will need to produce about 40 times more energy than is currently generated across Australia today .
Our rangelands and coastline are of particular interest to renewable energy companies and the new large scale developments we need to meet our targets will result in significant changes in land use across South Australia.
As this is mostly native title land and Aboriginal land, the informed participation of Aboriginal people is critical to achieving our targets.
