The Department for Energy and Mining has appointed PEG Consulting to conduct a review of the Emergency Management (Electricity Supply Emergencies) Amendment Act 2017, which introduced electricity supply emergencies into the Emergency Management Act 2004 (EM Act).

In 2021 the EM Act was further amended by the Emergency Management (Electricity Supply Emergencies) Amendment Act 2021.

This review meets the review requirement of the EM Act (Section 11).

The Emergency Management Act 2004 (the EM Act) establishes the legislative framework and principles for coordinating activities before, during and after emergencies.

The dedicated division in the EM Act (Division 6) introduced in 2017 assigns powers to the South Australian Minister for Energy and Mining to declare, make directions and take certain actions in relation to a potential or actual electricity supply emergency.

The Review focuses on who can be directed by the Minister, the powers of the Minister, and the declaration process in relation to electricity supply emergencies.

PEG Consulting are also reviewing the Emergency Management Act 2024 – more information is available from the Department of the Premier and Cabinet website.
