Program: Improving inclusion and career pathways for our Indigenous employees at Olympic Dam

Premier's Awards category: Inclusion and wellbeing - Resources

BHP has long recognised the competitive advantage which comes with an inclusive and diverse workforce. Olympic Dam (OD) has made significant headway in increasing Indigenous representation in FY23 with a sustainable plan to continue this trajectory.

The newly created ‘Diversity Program of Works’ (DPOW) increases Indigenous representation and creates a safe and inclusive environment. This includes:

  • Dedicated projects to advance Indigenous employment, including an Indigenous Project Management Traineeship project, a Diversity Apprenticeship Program and the Indigenous Development and Supervisor Acceleration Programs which support existing Indigenous employees to progress through the business.
  • Inclusive work areas through partnerships with our Traditional Owners and Indigenous vendors to create specialised areas with Indigenous artwork and which increase visibility of Indigenous culture.
  • Yarning Circles, providing opportunities for Indigenous staff to come together.
  • Supporting Indigenous businesses to build capability.
  • Indigenous Liaison Specialists to support the challenges faced by Indigenous employees and provide advice to leaders to create a culturally safe working environment.
  • Creation of the ‘Spirit’ Indigenous employees and ally network.

The outcomes achieved by DPOW are no more evident than in our Apprenticeship/Traineeship program which has seen Indigenous participation increase from 4% in 2020, to 12% in 2021 and then up to 37% in 2022.
