Project: Trial of Epiroc Battery M2C Jumbo

Category: Innovation and collaboration (resources) - mineral, extractives or petroleum exploration or operations

Since November 2022 BHP Olympic Dam has trialled a battery electric M2C Development Drill (termed Jumbo) in conjunction with equipment manufacturer Epiroc. This equipment uses the same carrier as Olympic Dam's current Jumbo fleet, with the diesel engine replaced by a 150 kW battery and electric traction motor.

The goals of the project were to test the productivity of battery electric technology versus traditional diesel engines along with associated environmental and health benefits.

The project utilises battery technology in underground mobile equipment and represents a new horizon in battery electric vehicles, whilst reinforcing BHP's commitment to managing emissions and operator safety.

The outcome of the trial showed significant improvement in operator comfort and operating environment. Key areas of improvement were the elimination of heat and particulates from the operating environment and a smoother ride with less vibration.

As part of the project Olympic Dam was able to upskill the mine electrical team through a nationally recognised training course, specifically focused on battery electric Jumbos, the first of its kind in Australia.
