Program: Empowering everyone to create a safer, more conscientious future through the Incident and Injury Free (IIF) Program

Category: Safety and wellbeing - Health and safety in energy generation, transmission, distribution, retail, energy products and services

Clarke Energy initiated the Incident and Injury Free (IIF) program in 2014, not just as a safety protocol but as a profound cultural shift, empowering every team member to take personal ownership.

The program has cultivated genuine attitude changes, a mindset which is intolerant of any level of incident or injury and has become an ingrained way of life which influences decisions and actions not only in professional realms, but also within the families and communities that our team members touch.

The IIF program's central tenets revolve around proactive risk management, employee engagement, and behavioural change.

As a direct result of IIF, Clarke Energy were awarded accreditation in the Federal Safety Commission, Work Health, and Safety Accreditation Scheme in 2019 for three years, and became principal contractor for federally funded building and construction infrastructure projects, worth of billions of dollars. In 2022, following a stringent audit process of the safety management system, we were awarded a further six-year accreditation extension until 2028.

IIF embodies the hierarchy of controls of risk management:

  1. Safety culture
Ingrained in our values, mission, and vision through daily site meetings, toolbox talks, newsletter and alert bulletins, quarterly meetings, and everyday conversation, creating the foundation that influences all other safety-related decisions and actions within the company.
  2. Elimination
Proactively seeking to identify and eliminate potential hazards through comprehensive risk assessments, swiftly addressing identified risks.
  3. Substitution
When elimination is not possible, substituting hazardous processes or equipment with safer alternatives to minimise inherent risks.
  4. Administrative controls
Policies, procedures, and guidelines are meticulously implemented to manage risks effectively. Regular safety meetings, training, and clear protocols for hazardous tasks establish a framework for safe operations.
