Neoen designs and implements the means to produce competitive renewable electricity, sustainably and on a large scale. Neoen Australia has over 3 GW of renewable energy assets in operation or under construction in the Australian market. Their innovative projects include the world's first bit battery - the Hornsdale Power Reserve, and a virtual battery solution designed to allow AGL to mimic a grid-scale battery.

BHP is a world-leading resources company with the purpose of bringing people and resources together to build a better world. BHP provides the materials for essential infrastructure, enabling better standards of living and facilitating greater prosperity. Their South Australian operations comprise surface and underground mining operations in one of the world’s most significant copper, gold, silver and uranium basins, and operates a fully integrated processing facility from ore to metal. BHP has a target of at least a 30% reduction in operational emissions by FY 2030.

Project: Neoen's renewable baseload powering BHP's Olympic Dam

Premier's Awards category: Innovation and collaboration - Energy

In November 2022, Neoen signed a landmark 70 MW renewable energy baseload contract with BHP to power half of its Olympic Dam mining operations in South Australia.

The deal’s innovative structure provides BHP with certainty of renewable energy supply 24/7 and unlocked the construction of over 400 MW of new renewable generation in South Australia’s Mid North region.

Neoen’s 203 MW Goyder South 1B Wind Farm will supply the energy, while its 200 MW/400 MWh Blyth Battery will firm the wind farm’s output, working in tandem with Neoen’s energy management expertise.

The resulting baseload product is a fully firmed (24/7) clean energy solution, along with the associated large-scale renewable generation certificates (LGC).

The contract required two large-scale projects to be ready to start construction and operations at similar times. This was made possible through Neoen’s ability to leverage its advanced SA development portfolio and the depth of its energy management expertise, utilising the lessons and experience of Neoen’s Hornsdale Power Reserve, the world’s first big battery.

Neoen worked closely with the Clean Energy Finance Corporation and major commercial lenders to ensure finance was available for the project.

Broader outcomes for the state include the Blyth Battery helping improve grid stability, and the Goyder South benefit sharing program with the local community and the Ngadjuri Nation Traditional Owners which includes the creation of a new national park.
