Project:  SIMEC Mining Magnetite Expansion Project - enabling GREENIRON and GREENSTEEL

Premier's Award category: Innovation and Collaboration - Resources

The need for decarbonising the global steel industry has never been as clear as it is today. Governments, customers, investors, employees and communities are all aligned needing industry to decarbonise. In the birthplace of the Australian iron ore industry, SIMEC Mining is now driving the shift towards a decarbonised steel sector by enabling greener iron and steelmaking.

SIMEC will transition from supplying hematite to coal-dependent steelmakers to direct-reduction-grade magnetite product to low-carbon steelmakers.

This transformation allows processing of Middleback Ranges ore - creating the precursor for GREENIRON - leading to cleaner iron and steel manufacturing. Following success in extensive testwork and trials, and supported by multiple collaborations, SIMEC Mining has launched the Magnetite Expansion Project to access a substantial reserve, advancing its Low-Carbon Steelmaking goals.

The Magnetite Expansion Project is progressing through definition phases, with the feasibility study due to complete at the end of 2023.

With an anticipated mine life exceeding 20 years, the operation aims to produce 7.5 million tonnes annually, generating over $800 million in annualised revenue.
