Program: Advocating for change - promoting an inclusive work environment

When it comes to inclusion and wellbeing, sometimes the biggest hurdles are recognising there is an issue and having the courage to ask for help.

Stephanie Tyszta, an Area Manager in Santos' Cooper Basin operations, is a proactive leader in this space. Whether it be private one-on-one advice, speaking at leadership forums or powerful story telling in front of a large audience, Stephanie has used her own career experiences to educate and empower others by:

  • Sharing her experiences as a woman in fly in fly out (FIFO) operations, leadership and mental health.
  • Encouraging people to use the Employee Assistance Program or other resources available to them, reflecting on her own experience in doing so – “it’s not as scary or awkward as I thought it would be!”
  • Providing tangible solutions for frontline leaders to deal with unconscious bias in the workplace and creating a more inclusive environment.

Stephanie is a powerful advocate for change. She has shown great resilience and safety leadership by actively driving to educate field and office personnel on the unconscious biases that can exist and the negative impact that can have on mental health.

She has successfully fostered a more inclusive work environment through workshops and coaching sessions to help leadership understand the current challenges faced by women and people of other diverse backgrounds at Santos. Not only has Stephanie shared her career journey - her story - to build a real sense of awareness of the lived experience of other people at Santos, she offered real tangible solutions on how to move the culture to a more inclusive organisation.

The Healthier Santos framework provides a broad collection of health and wellbeing training, resources, and support for our people. But it is only through leaders like Stephanie that Healthier Santos and wellbeing is brought to life.

Stephanie’s leadership and advocacy in the inclusion and wellbeing space is considered best practice by Santos, as we learn to navigate and integrate psychosocial risk management into our health and safety management. While psychosocial risk management is Australian based legislation, we see the benefits of introducing these principles to our operations globally, including sharing the effectiveness of Stephanie’s approach.
