Program: Improving health and wellbeing habits in a high-risk workforce

Santos employees and contractors working in remote areas such as Moomba and rural Queensland, are consistently exposed to extreme UV and temperatures throughout the Australian summer.

To improve the health and wellbeing of the workforce Santos developed and implemented a skin check program for employees and contractors, and developed an education and monitoring campaign to build better hydration habits.

It was proposed that ‘Skin Patrol’ attend the sites to complete skin checks - approximately 200 people were checked, 10 were identified to have lesions suspicious of melanoma and booked for urgent follow up treatment.

Ongoing education about the importance of skin checks and encouraging participation in the Skin Patrol programme will help improve the health and wellbeing of the Santos workforce through early detection of sun damage.

The potential consequences of poor hydration habits, particularly in extreme heat conditions, can be severe. To improve hydrating habits, Santos engaged ‘Thortz’, manufacturers of a brand of hydration products stocked by Santos, to present to the workforce on the importance of staying hydrated. Portable saliva-based hydration testers were purchased to highlight times of dehydration and the impact of caffeine on hydration.

These portable devices, coupled with the availability of hydration products from Thortz help individuals identify when they are dehydrated and encourage everyone to look out for those around them.
