Fostering South Australia’s energy transition.

The role of natural gas in the state’s energy transition was a key theme at the recent Department for Energy and Mining (DEM) Roundtable for Oil and Gas Projects in South Australia annual meeting.

The Roundtable’s scope has evolved to include energy resources such as green hydrogen, natural hydrogen and carbon capture and storage over the last couple of years. This meeting saw the name changed to the Roundtable for Energy Resources in South Australia to reflect the broader scope.

The program of highly regarded and thought-provoking national speakers included Tony Wood (Grattan Institute), Rick Wilkinson (EnergyQuest), George Bouroubas (K2 Asset Management), Samantha McCulloch (new CEO of the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association, APPEA) and Geoff O’Brien (CO2CRC). Updates were provided by Paul Heithersay (DEM) on mining and energy in South Australia and Sam Crafter (Office of Hydrogen Power South Australia) on South Australian hydrogen projects. Delegates also heard from companies exploring for petroleum and natural hydrogen in the state, South Australian Native Title Services, the Australian School of Petroleum and Energy Resources, and DefenceSA.

The Roundtable was also an opportunity to promote the current 4-week public consultation on the draft Bill to amend the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Act 2000 (PGE Act). Submissions close 5 pm 18 November 2022.

A large audience gathered at the end of the day to commemorate the late Barry Goldstein, DEM’s former Executive Director of Energy Resources. Barry pioneered the Roundtable for Oil and Gas in 2010 to engage with all stakeholders. Heartfelt speeches were given by Paul Heithersay, John Kaldi via video (Emeritus Professor CO2CRC) and Ian Davies (Chairman of APPEA and CE of Senex Energy) recognising the massive contributions to the energy resources sector achieved by Barry.
