MaxMine Carbon Project

Winner: Innovation and collaboration, ETS sector

MaxMine is a mining and technology services provider that captures, processes and analyses vast amounts of data to deliver significant productivity gains and improved performance to open pit mining operations.

To accelerate the sustainability of humanity’s scarce resources and reduce open pit mining’s carbon footprint, MaxMine has developed MaxMine Carbon.

MaxMine Carbon allows open pit mining companies to measure, manage and reduce their carbon footprint associated with Scope 1 diesel emissions and reduce operating costs associated with diesel consumption.

MaxMine Carbon achieves this by utilising innovative technology and extensive data analytics capabilities - gathering a thousand times more data than conventional fleet management systems, then translating this data to measure carbon emissions.

By leveraging the mining data captured by MaxMine Carbon, the average open pit mine could reduce its carbon footprint by up to 20%.

Q&A with MaxMine

Mining companies have made commitments to cut emissions by 50% to 100% over the next 10 to 20 years.

Hard to abate: pathway to haul fleet decarbonisation is via battery or hydrogen equipment options that are yet to be proven, developed, commercialised and built at scale. There is a clear risk these technologies will run late.

The industry appears to be waiting for this new technology to be delivered before taking action.

MaxMine offers a near term  to ability to:

  • Firstly understand the abatement options better
  • Make near term carbon intensity reductions of 5% to 15%

With the mining industry needing to mine 6 times more than it does today to build cleaner energy solutions like solar, wind and water energy, mining will become harder. As we deplete our high quality raw materials a larger footprint will be required to get the same results from lower grade reserves.

MaxMine believes that a reduction in mining’s carbon footprint is achievable now using data analytics. We help reduce carbon emissions by maximising payloads, reducing idle time, off-haul or wasted operation and more efficient driving.

It is making an impact because it’s reducing carbon now at a time when operators are otherwise thinking “we need to wait for new tech”.

Firstly, to raise awareness of the opportunity to start the carbon reduction process in mining fleet operations now, and that there is no need to delay.

MaxMine was founded with just five employees in Adelaide in 2016 and has expanded to a team of around 50. We’re a scale up with growth aspirations, and we’re hoping this award will help raise awareness in our leading, innovative technology and encourage mining companies to consider MaxMine Carbon to help them achieve their ESG compliance.

Additionally, this award helps to promote MaxMine as an attractive potential employer.

South Australia has a vibrant innovation ecosystem and is leading in recognising the link between mining and renewable energy, therefore supporting a strong energy and mining sector that will ensure South Australia continues to grow and thrive as an economy.

Quite simply, SA offers a brilliant lifestyle, Adelaide is one of the world's most liveable cities. For tech companies, it has great universities producing talented graduates.

The mining industry will become increasingly important as we transition toward mining critical minerals to help build green technologies.

The world needs mining to supply the net zero transient.

We need to improve productivity and efficiency.

Mining has been running behind other industries moving towards digitialisation - but we're on a cusp now of rapid acceleration, to finally start delivering via tech.

With the transition to green energy and the importance of reducing CO2 emissions increases, tracking emissions and reducing emissions will become increasingly important.

By using innovative technology and our data analytics capabilities, MaxMine can support mining companies in developing a pathway to lower carbon emissions that maintains or even increases production.

It’s growth with a purpose. MaxMine is making miming more efficient and safer and we are doing that at a 60% year on year growth rate, so it's pretty exciting.

The Premier’s Awards are important as they provide a platform for businesses to share their achievements with government and industry and demonstrate how our program is making an impact.

To highlight both the criticality of out sector and the fact that we need to improve its performance. We need the best talent in the world and the Premier's Awards draw attention to what we are doing.

MaxMine has over 6 million hours of mining operational data.

We realised we could use this data to produce an indication of the potential scope for carbon emissions savings that could be made at individual mine sites based on the mine type, operational maturity and asset types.

We knew that this data also supported business and productivity optimisation, through working with our clients to reduce their fuel usage, we were also helping them to lower their carbon emissions

  • High technology barriers, a lot of what we do would be easy if the application was not in mining
  • COVID made deployment difficult and sales growth hard
  • Labour shortages over the last 18 months

South Australia is an innovation and technology adopter and the government supports the businesses in a way that enables them to grow and thrive.

MaxMine exists to accelerate the sustainability of humanity's scarce resources. When you work in mining and combine it with technology, the work you produce can have a profound impact on the environment

Pick a company with strong growth prospects and a great culture. The opportunity to learn and to enjoy yourself.
