Hanson Construction Materials nominated two projects for the 2020 Premier's Awards:

  • Crushing fixed plant decommissioning in the Environment (Resources) category
  • From by-product to raw material in the Innovation and collaboration Resources) category

Nominated project: Crushing fixed plant decommissioning

Premier's Award category: Environment (Resources sector)

Hanson's White Rock QuarryHanson operates White Rock Quarry, a private mine east of Adelaide CBD, on a site highlighted by the South Australian Government as a Strategic Resource Area (an area of key economic value, vital for South Australia to support the needs of local communities).

Following dust complaints in early 2021, a trial of in-pit crushing using a mobile crusher instead of the fixed plant was implemented. Since then no complaints associated to dust or noise have been received on site, and air quality monitoring shows site compliance with air quality legislation.

Decommissioning of the fixed plant has brought operational efficiencies and benefits of enhanced safety features and better environmental outcomes.

The mobile plant will still be used while the Mine Operation Plan review is under assessment.

Dust management and dust trigger action response plans have been developed to the satisfaction of the Environment Protection Authority, and will continue to be applied on site.

Nominated project: From by-product to raw material

Premier's Award category: Innovation and collaboration (Resources sector)

Hanson’s Golden Grove Quarry is a wet sand processing facility located at 18 km northeast of Adelaide CBD, within the Golden Grove Extractive Industries Zone (GGEIZ).

‘Silt’, the by-product produced during the washing and screening process was stored in silt dams. This presented risks for future generations due to the size and depth of the historic dams.

Hanson created a new set of evaporation ponds, optimising silt recovery, allowing effective management for using the silt as raw material in the brick industry and for rehabilitation purposes.

Outcomes include:

  • silt recovery (stripping campaigns) supplied to other companies in the GGEIZ for brick manufacturing
  • material available to be used in rehabilitation
  • long-term safety associated with tailings dams has been improved i.e. silt is dried in shallow evaporation ponds and recovered within 12 months of being produced, rather than remaining in silt dams for decades.

Hanson Construction Materials continue to work to maintain and improve high standards in management of natural resources, safety and the environment.
