Nominated project: Iluka Resource Work Experience Program

Premier's Awards category: Community (Resources sector)

The Iluka Resources (J-A) Work Experience Program is designed to increase recruitment of Indigenous employees in the South Australian mining sector and promote the value of mining to Far West Coast members.

The program is a collaboration between Iluka Resources, Far West Coast Aboriginal Corporation, EyrePlus (who deliver locally-led services) and Spencer Institute of TAFE Ceduna. It provides opportunities for Indigenous youth to engage with local employment, specifically the mining industry, including paid work experience on site at Iluka’s Jacinth-Ambrosia (J-A)operations.

Since 2018, 20 people have participated in the program, with 14 being offered employment at J-A. Four participants were offered employment elsewhere.

Overall the program is considered successful and has received support from all partners to continue in an ongoing basis.

The partnership is now looking to create a Regional Workforce Development Strategy with a continuing focus on education, training and employment in mining and other industries.
