Kaefers’ Managing Director attended the Darwin site and engaged with employees, where a common theme that arose was poor ‘choices’ being made in the workplace.

This led to the development of a safety program called “Safe Choice - Right Choice”. Although successful, this did not support the business holistically.

The program was further developed into the five key pillars of SAFE Choices (Safety), PROUD Choices (Quality), GREEN Choices (Environment), HEALTHY Choices (People) and EFFICIENT Choices (Productivity).

How did the program name arise? Giving a keynote speech, Kevin Sheedy (former Essendon Football Club coach) mentioned the need for players to constantly make Smart Choices. The phrase was implemented as KAEFER’s behaviour and culture program name - SMART Choices.

SMART Choices is KAEFER’s cultural program and something it is very proud to use every day.

Q&A with Kaefer Integrated Services

KAEFER developed and implemented a culture-based program to target Smart Choices in the workplace.

The Smart Choices program is made up of 5 key pillars:

  • SAFE choices - identifying the safe choices that employees make
  • PROUD choices - identifying what choices employees made to make them proud
  • HEALTHY choices - identifying what healthy choices an employee has made, including health and fitness, and mental health
  • GREEN choices - identifying what choices employees have made to help the environment
  • EFFICIENT choices - identifying what choices employees have made to help complete the work more efficiently and increase productivity

Kaefer had a safety program that focused on keeping our employees safe.

We recognised that employee safety is paramount, there is more to our business. As such we wanted a program that addressed the 5 key pillars of the business and gave our employees something tangible they can relate to in empowering the choices they make daily in these areas.

Our employees relate to all the 5 pillars, for their individual choices that they make both at work and at home. The program is more encompassing than being purely based around safety, however all pillars relate back to the employee’s safety in some way.

We have also introduced a rewards and recognition program that identifies monthly winners for the best choices made. This is communicated nationally which also makes the employees PROUD. Our employees are our most valuable assets, and this program supports our employees.

KAEFER are very proud of our Smart Choices program and the results that we have achieved since implementing the program. We see value in sharing this success with others to help others improve safety and wellbeing in the workplace.
